imagine images everyday

I currently have some 200 images on my phone. That I have yet to sync, duplicate and sort on the laptop. That is just from a short period of time, and I've deleted a bunch along the way as well - keeping only those that are good enough.

Back when using film it was 24 at a time. Maybe for some trips you would do two or three rolls. Now that is a trip to the playground, or a long walk when the weather has changed. 

Just knowing they are there, that I can have a look is (so far) more rewarding than looking at a lot of them. They are a gift to my future self. For remembering days, weeks and months now gone. For inspiration, and joy. And for limited curation, in terms of prints, books and magnets.

Snap your way around

There is no better way to change how you experience the place you live, than by getting out the camera - and going for a walk. And since I like a lot of others use my mobile as only camera, the first part is easy.

Stuck in time

The second part - the walking - might require a bit more effort. Hopefully summer will grace us with some suitable days, but if not - then a large umbrella and some boots will make the experience as memorable.

For some having a clear path is the best way to get to it. Personally I prefer the random stroll, letting the images build the story and the path.

Pick a place you often walk past. But stop there. Try to take ten snaps, at least five different subjects - right there. 

Then pick one of them as a theme for the next hour or so, and off you go.

Remember the "keeper ratio" - one in fifty might be the one to print and hang on the wall. Five can go on insta. Burn the others to a disc for eternity and beyond.

Lost in time

An assorted braindump for Wired 17.12 - so pushing this one backwards in time, more to come, more to go.

www.fora.tv - TED talks for the masses...? Seems like a sort of dumping post for mid-list conferences that want something more than their own blog and vimeo posting for attention. Mixing premium (500) with free (10000+) content. But since this is the first time I've re-heard about it since then mayhap the need just isn't there? More than easy enough to embed from vimeo or youtube and then use social media to promote it yourself - or have the attendees and presenters do it.

Photojojo - iPhone lenses @ $40 ?

 I'm still planning on getting a small "pocket lens", now with being back on iOS and a 4s it makes even more sense. Sort of.

Apps like Instagram makes for a different scope of photos. And while it isn't true macro, it can go pretty close for that weird urban, industrial too real look.

Guess it would make an ideal impulse buy, but haven't seen them in the local "almost" Apple Store. Guess not official enough to carry. Or too slim margins.


Snap on the right is from my "Android stint" - found the new "from you phone" option in Blogger. Actually cool. But short codes like WP would wow me more.

(sidenote; just put a macro-band in the shopping cart, just for a few fun shots. Chance of completing purchase? 60%...)



Ads noted; 2 * QR codes, google Goggles ad - is it really smarter, simpler than a code url or sms txt call to action? Especially with pretty custom short url available; jr.ly/FORD11 ? Or is it about being "innovative" in print? Expanding boundaries because url or text didn't track well enough (or perform?) Guess it comes from reading the paper and most magazines at home - don't really feel the need to read more on a tiny screen, when I can just google or type my way towards the full picture.

LaCie - MosKeyTO - 8gb usb MINI drive - $19 list price now, should be around NOK 200? It is almost too small not to use. As a quick backup, drop box sync or just keylogger ;) In fact they've even added in matching cloud storage from something called 'wuala'.



Also had a short post in the Start section on Competitive coding - using Pascal and C++ as the languages. No java. So in a way basics still rule? Pascal was the first 'real' language I was thought at uni, then we moved on to C++. While those a year later got a new class with java as intro.

Thinking back to a world where Java was the new hotness, that today is ObjectiveC and Apps. Back then it was Applets to rule them all. Same concept really. Make some dedicated code, play on top of a set of API's and a runtime. And distribute the file across purely digital channels.

That failed - at least compared to the hype and the potential. While the iPhone that initially touted web apps broke the bank and then some in terms of full on apps. Chance, planning, maturity or something more?




Blasting out tunes from the past in iTunes - jumping around in the grunge, heavy and punk genre buckets.

More on georss - blogpost led me to google blog- then a bit of copy paste work around in flick made my images pop up on the map. Just like magic. Loving it. And that was released in march 07...

Also found a fun part of flickr  related to camera useage - drilled down to the 450 page. (Chart (c) yahoo/flickr and so on) - it is now ranked 4th of all Canon cameras in terms of volume and popularity "28,784 items uploaded yesterday"

Scale, test and improve

The EU is building a digital library - "direct access to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers"

The prototype was launched November 20th, but quickly take down - due to excessive traffic reported as "more than 10m hits per hour". Comparing that to the official stats here in Norway with VG.no clocking in some 350m PI last week - should equate to 2m per hour over the whole week, and a bit more during peaks.

So the conclusion? Great idea - to bad about the miscalculation on the interest. looking forward to the re-launch!

Might have been a better idea to get things going with just some of the content types - those not needing a lot of server prowess for pushing out. Seems like the partner list is a bit thin in terms of high tech and hosting - no Akamai or Cisco here.

Can't imagine YouTube and Google seeing anything less with their expanded HD offering over the last few days...

Keep going, keep improving

Evening Reconnaissance Mission by merlinmann

A wonderful and inspering post on how you need to keep on going in order to improve your skills as a photographer.

Doesn't matter if it is "just" a hobby - the way to improve and get better is to do it, over and over. Get the basics inside and on automatic. Digital means endless supply of "film" - so there is no need to skimp. [Found by tweet from f.day]

And if you need some more inspiration or guidance, there are several good podcasts on photography out there (Tips from top floor, photowalkthrough, martin bailey,...)

Not to forget a recent post on eirikso - gives some visual aides for different ISO, aperture and shutter. Now get out there and make your own test and flip thorugh them in picasa.
