Just a quick one-two-three; huu-raah for Norway...

The weather was great all weekend, Spirit of Norway won the boat race (see Tuesday's entry), Petter Solberg raced his way up to the numer two slot in Finland and "Tutta" Pedersen got a second place in Stockholms HP Open [in Swedish]golf tournament

Stress - work

Now here is a subject that is good enough to cover during "working hours" - STRESS

"The CIO role is tailor-made for feeling out of control."

- power over development, but usually not over budgets and high-level priorities - over developers but not over users and their changing, undefined desires. With increasing use of computers there are more systems than ever, rather than a few good, stable suitable systems for all.

"Constant stress does more than damage your health. It destroys your judgement and distorts your decision-making process."

- you don't have time to read the backgroound material, never mind preparing a brief for somebody else on it! So it boils down to what is most convenient AS-IS, with a low up-front cost and a nice looking feature list. Then two months down the road everything has to be reworked and refitted - because.... well, no one knows!

"For 50 percent of the people who get cardiovascular disease, death is the first symptom"

- so much for restorative treatment.

...so that's it - I'm heading out into the beautiful summer day, to relax and enjoy life! (but I'll probably be stuck in front of the pc again this evening... c'est la IT-vie)

Wired Ideas

Have to stop reading Wired.... just getting to much input - two more and I'm definetly calling it a nice evening of surfing and musings.

First off - US patent 5.732.138 - the Lavalamp Random Number Generator... who would have thought that so much thought and effort goes into making a numebr - and then ends up beeing used for generating dices in an online game of backgammon!?! (Source code on SF so set up your own lamp - and you can start playing dice at home without complaining of "bad luck" www.blinkenlights.de/images/ blm/huge/bad_luck.blm.gif)

Then, floating on (pun intended!) to AntiGravity - or ion-wind-propullsion as it is debunked as...
Smoking out the problems - I admit to being geeky enough to want my own "hovercraft", even if pumping 20 000 V into something on my living-room table is out for now, leave it to the French and their mice for now (memo to self: need to move to place with shack suitable for creative diversions....)

Fireworks - and then some

Looking out at the night-sky reminds me of natural fireworks - a deep yellow half-moon, scattered clouds like paint frozen on the sky... WHERE is my new camera when I really need it!?!
Oh well - read up a bit on "real" fireworks and hopefullt I'll get some good pictures come the weekend. (Of the summer sky - and mayb some fireworks from the boatrace with Spirit of Norway looking for another "home turf" win in the big race.

Speaking - or writing as it actually is ;D - of spectacular sights, I wouldn't mind a quick trip over to the Big Apple - for some serious Anime action later this month... even if today the Marriot might not be top of the places to visit.

Maybe a trip down "memory" lane - with old games at the CGE could be nice? Or reading books with other in Canada at Torcon?

...just back from one vacation - and can't stop drooling over other places to go and things to do! Isn't that typical? The more you travel, the more you want to see - the more you learn the more you want to find out - knowledge breeds a thirst for knowledge, because we understand how much more there is to learn/see/do/play/read/... (most activities here - what is it possible to do fully today?)

Summers lease

So, summer isn't quite over - actually it almost just keeps getting better, warmer, sunnier, .... but my week (and then some) out of town - is over - and I'm back to typing up some thoughts and musings

Relationships takes two - breaking up only takes one
Is this way commitment is so hard - and the reason friendships seem to last longer than "real" relationships?

"Cloakroom community" - when you hang your coat in a restaurant or at the theatre, it gets close to a lot of other jackets - does this mean that you have something in common with the others having dinner that day - or seeing the same show? Is that all it takes to make a community - spatial closeness due to soverlapping plans (independent of the reasons behind - birthday party, breaking up, celebrating a business deal - or trying to make one)

...added a title in October, reformating for new template and new blogger style
(and yes, it is a nod to the bard himself, W.S, sonnet # anyone)

26 things - the international photgraphic scavenger hunt
Take pictures of 26 differenet subjects - such as love, home, sound and footwear - and link to them for a world wide exhibition...
Nice twist to a traditional concept (usually 24 pictures = one roll of film, no second chances!) - taken to a digital edge.

Maybe a basis for blogging going forward - blog on one subject each day for a month, then swap the entries around?

sun is shining, so this is all for now - summer is good

Thursday, July 10

each word is drawn on a string, dragged out of my mouth direct from my soul...painful but necessary, at least that's what i tell myself... - Kylie

...reading some other blogs today - sitting here in sunny Norway (a wondeful summer evening, it barely gets dark at this time of year) it feels strange to "connect" to someone so far away, to be a part of their feelings, their life and feelings.

Blogging is a tool - a state of mind and mayhap a new paradigm of communication.

...so how will it and the internet evolve as picture phones evolve? Let's find out!

Way... a first short line on the "New" interface - finally working from XP with fancy buttons

way to go Google [that's to the new toolbar beta, using the 'old' 1.70 version and loving it]

Some thoughts on the way out - are writers able to judge their own work?
Should they be allowed to reply to reviews of their works - or are they too partial?
Democray - free speech - or proper distance?
Nordic term "habilitet" - conflict of interest most apropriate translation

Brings up the question - is a book just a book (product) or more than the product - an artwork, a creation... and as such the basis for discussion and increased insight rather than merely profit margins and TRS calculations?

Wednesday, June 18

Kurt Cobain - been some time since I thought about him, and more accurately his premature "departure" (live fast, die young - leave a beatuiful corpse...)

I was in the Army when I heard the news - and I remember a full-page image in Time (or was it Newsweek?) after his death...
- been ten years, and still no word :D

A world filled with books
Over production - too many books... in Norway? Compared to what? Worldwide sales? The quality of those published? Or to the cost of writing and editing books in Norway? Should we send all authors to Thailand - and teach a large group of former East-bloc editors/professors to learn Norwegian and get the editing done for 1/10 of the price?

Am I beeing to sarcastic? Is it meaningless to complain of too many books - when a book is so much more than just a book; some books are esacpe from the rainy days of summer, some are for putting the kids to sleep, some are for learning a new subject - or engaging in debate about an exsisting one. Some are a more durable alternative to the weekly gossip mags - and some are a way for the author to work his/her way through a problem...

How does that relate to the web - and mayhap blogging in particular? Does blogging make surfing easier, or does the simplicity add to the increasing amount of "unknown" content?

MATRIX RELOADED ...I belive the hype!
...Saw the original 4 times at the movies, and a couple of times since then on video, dvd and tv

- so what to write about? The differnet angels? The hype or the deeper meaning - reality or just fiction

Jean Baudrillard - lies and truth - some links [UTA ed - net - MTSU]

Lewis Carrol
Blue as sleep, Red as free - Marx, communism as opposed to conservatives? Revolutions this one... oh, sorry - the next one!

Carsten Jensen - anything on our Danish philosophic friend?

Wachawski - as in Monsters INC? A coincidende - Mike? SOunding board or the new mickey (mouse)?
Or another typo in Morgenbladet? Yup... Wachowski...
BILLY CRYSTAL (Mike Wazowski) gives a hilarious performance as the energetic, enthusiastic and excitable Scare Assistant to James P. Sullivan

MUSIC
- listening more to (my) music now than any time before... so easy to pump up an album or two when surfing after digitizing my stuff (sorry - not sharing it... EAC for great sound, large file size - actually to good to use on girlfriends Sony Discman (almost...) - but works great on our surround system!)
Convenience goes a long way... no wonder people are buying less records, when they finally figure out what they actually have... and are able to play it just like 1 - 2.

Quality Popular Television : Cult TV, the Industry, and Fans by Mark Jancovich (Editor), James Lyons (Editor)

"The Sopranos, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friends, and ER are examples among many of a new era of the "must-see" programs"
Well - at least some of them are for me... Buffy rokcs - just bought Season 2 for my girlfrined (bday present - she loves it as much/more) on DVD - which is also probably another reason for decline in cd sales: do you want a full-price 40 minute album with two songs you really like (8 minutes?) or a TWO nice-price DVDs - the Matrix and Pulp Fiction perhaps? The worst I've seen was Amelie [Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain - site] - the CD with the soundtrack was $5 more than the DVD of the movie - in the same store!!!

Other small sites that i should have a look at
- article by mr Vassnes ?

- grimstad, animation and shorts...?

- digital democracy or just a virtual meeting for those already IN power? YOU decide!

- vacations in style

norskehus.no - vivaldi looks nice ... but they didn't have it online - just in the ad for the site! REALLY bright!!!

- onani spill, almost banned (requested removed by the Minister of Culture)

- poetry in motion, Eminem translation, new debate in Norway - should he get the Nobel prize, and do poets understand rap (and rappers poetry)..?

then there is the shit list

  2. JAy Z
  3. Tupac +
  4. Biggie (Smalls? +)
